Thank you to everyone who voted for me in yesterday's general election. Obviously I am disappointed with the national result, but I am pleased that Labour's share of the vote increased both locally and nationally, with Labour moving from third to second in the Wantage constituency. We had a civilised campaign and I think I am allowed a little smile that the parties that claimed Wantage was a two horse race came third and fourth....

Businesses and residents in southern Oxfordshire depend on the A34. Even today, we suffer from frequent accidents closing the road, most recently last night when a lorry caught fire. People are late to work. Villages are hammered by HGVs on diversion. Bus networks collapse with delays of over an hour not uncommon.

Pubs all over the country are struggling. Around 30 pubs are closing every week and Labour understands how this can destroy a community.

Last year, the Hare in West Hendred closed and the village no longer has a pub. Stephen strongly supports the 'Save the Hare' group, who aim to purchase the pub and re-open it. Many other communities are concerned that they too are in danger of losing their only pub.
